You’re at the scene of the accident. Your friend is lying on the road, cars are passing by, and there’s broken glass everywhere. It looks dangerous.
What needs to be done now?

Stand in the way of other vehicles to stop traffic.

I assess the accident scene, check for dangers, secure the area.

Go immediately to my friend, feel for a pulse.

The accident scene is now safer. You go to your friend: She is lying still, eyes closed.
What's the first thing you do with your friend?

Shake my friend vigorously.

Immediately check her breathing.

I speak loudly to her, touch her shoulder.

Your friend didn't react to your speaking or touching. You check if you can recognize anything else. On her leg, you see a slight but bleeding wound.
What happens next?

Feel for a pulse at her wrist.

I check her breathing: tilt her head back; for 10 seconds, look, listen, feel.

Get the first aid kit.

Your friend is still not reacting, but her breathing is normal.
What is important for your friend now?

Immediately start bandaging her leg wound.

I place her in the recovery position.

Lay my friend flat on her back, legs up.

Your friend is now in the recovery position and breathing.
What is your next important step?

First attend to the wound, then call emergency services.

Ask passersby to get an AED.

I dial 112 (or instruct someone to), answer the W-questions.

The emergency call has been made. Your friend is in the recovery position. Meanwhile, passersby have gathered around you.
What do you do next?

Send the passersby away.

I ask passersby to get a car first-aid kit, put on gloves, and dress my friend's leg wound with a sterile bandage.

Elevate her leg and let the wound air dry.

You put on gloves and get dressing material from the first-aid kit. You attend to the wound.
What else can you do in the meantime?

Call emergency services again because they still haven't arrived.

I speak to my friend and explain what measures I'm taking to help, even if she is unconscious.

Nothing.

Emergency services are on their way, but your friend is not yet conscious. You notice that her skin on her legs and hands is becoming cool and pale.
What is your next important step now?

Carefully bring my friend into an upright position to stimulate circulation.

I cover my friend with a rescue blanket or available clothing and protect her from cold ground.

Ask 2 passersby for help to rub my friend's arms and legs warm.

Your friend is covered, but now you've noticed that the bleeding on her leg isn't stopping, but rather getting stronger. The bandage is already soaked through.
What is your next step?

Tie off her leg to stop the bleeding.

I leave the existing bandage in place and press another bandage or a sterile wound dressing firmly over it.

Remove the soaked bandage and apply a fresh sterile wound dressing.

You've performed all the measures, and your friend is still lying there unconscious. Time to relax, right?
What's next?

Check her pulse - if it's not palpable, cardiopulmonary resuscitation must begin immediately!

Check her blood sugar level - if it's a diabetic emergency, action must be taken with the emergency pen now!

I check her consciousness and breathing again (10 seconds, look, listen, feel) - is the situation still stable or has something changed?
